A few months back I went visiting a
family friend of mine in the neighborhood to check if she was back, from the
hospital, and found her in the bathroom of her apartment doing heavy laundry. I
looked so much shocked at the plum ebony tall woman that she busted into
laughter and began to tell me what had lead to the miracle that now astounded
me. She explained that the last time I had visited her; she hadn’t had the
chance to be taken to the hospital before one of her church members dropped in on
her and, told her she wouldn’t need to go to the hospital yet.
This church member ran back to her
house which is not so far away, came back with dried moringa leaves, and boiled
it for her to drink. After taking this medicinal leaf this family friend of
mine said she was encouraged to go to sleep. And strangely when she woke up in
the evening, her body felt as though it hadn’t been ill. I did a quick
flashback to my own herbal concoctions and quickly add moringa leaf to the
list.
As a little child I had watched my
Granny severely tormented by high-blood pressure, stroke and diabetes, and
vowed to guide myself against these wicked ailments or any kind. If I was this knowledgeable
when my Grandma suffered these diseases, the sudden death that took her wouldn’t have been
her lot. I would have managed her health with many herbs. Though she wasn’t the
herb type but, she would have taken anything I offer her. She loved me that
much.
This is how I use moringa leaves,
turmeric and garlic. I cook moringa leaves and use it like spinach in my stew and soup. Besides
being used fresh as a substitute for spinach, the leaves are dried and ground
into a powder like turmeric to use in sauces and other meals. I also put
handful of dried moringa leaves in the kettle, add enough water and leave it to
boil well until the water turns real brown. Remember though, that unlike
most plants, moringa leaves heating above 60 degrees Celsius can destroy some of
the plant's nutritional values. When the plant is ready,
I turn it into a big cup, peel two cuts out of raw turmeric, five peeled of
garlic gloves, chew very well and then, wash it down with the cooling moringa
tea. Sometimes, I simply chew these
herbs separately like some people chew sweet gums.
Now let’s look at the healthy
benefits of the herbs:

Benefits of Moringa Leaf
Most Healthy Benefits of Turmeric
Antioxidant
The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which is known as a
powerful antioxidant. This means it targets dangerous free radicals in
the body and reduces the damage they are able to cause DNA and cells.
When cells are healthy the body is healthy, which means turmeric offers
general wellness benefits, as well as targeting specific health
problems.
Anti-Inflammatory
Curcumin also has anti-inflammatory qualities. This makes it
effective for fighting heart disease, osteoarthritis pain, and other
health problems related to inflammation (researchers believe there are
many links between inflammation and chronic illness). Curcumin is
believed to reduce certain enzymes in the body known to trigger
inflammation.
Heart Health
Turmeric reduces the risk of blood clots and prevents the build up of
plaque in the arteries, which helps in the battle against stroke and
other clot-related problems. There are also studies showing turmeric is
beneficial for reducing bad cholesterol and improving good cholesterol,
both of which play a role in a person’s heart health.
Slows the Progression of Alzheimer’s
Researchers studying the effects of curcumin in relation to
Alzheimer’s cite the health of those living in regions that consume
turmeric in high quantities. People in India aged 70 and older have a
much lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than those in the same age group
in the United States. Many believe this difference is due to the high
intake of Indian curries, which are made with turmeric. Further research
points to turmeric’s ability to remove amyloyd plaque buildup in the
brain, which is believed to put people at risk for developing the
Alzheimer’s.
Natural Painkiller
An article in the July 2009 issue of Time magazine points to a study
conducted at the University of Arizona. Researchers found rodents
injected with a material known to cause joint pain suffered less when
the injections were paired with curcumin. The article also cites
anecdotal evidence singing the praises of turmeric for fighting a
variety of pain that would otherwise be treated with over-the-counter
pain medication.
Skin Health
Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory benefits can be beneficial when applied
topically, too. It is considered an effective treatment for psoriasis
and other skin disorders, and it is a natural antiseptic and can be used
to treat burns and cuts.
Cancer Fighter
The jury is still out on just how effective turmeric is for fighting
cancer. Some health experts point to its anti-inflammatory benefits and
draw conclusions based on the link between inflammation and the
development of cancer. Free radicals and cell damage are believed to be
linked to cancer, too, so if turmeric is able to work as an antioxidant
it has a secondary anti-cancer effect.
According to well-known holistic health practitioner, Dr. Andrew
Weil, turmeric reduces the carcinogenic compound that form when meat is
fried, grilled, or boiled by up to 40%. Dr. Weil also believes turmeric
is effective for fighting melanoma and in halting the spread of breast
cancer.
There are also preliminary studies showing turmeric could be
beneficial for preventing breast, prostate, skin, and colon cancer.
Since turmeric is safe and offers a variety of general heath benefits,
you have nothing to lose by adding it to your diet in moderate amounts.
If you plan to use concentrated doses of curcumin in your cancer
treatment plan, be sure you inform your doctors to prevent any
interference with other components of your treatment.
Antibacterial and Antiviral
Garlic is most well-known for its antibacterial and antiviral
properties. They help control bacterial, viral, fungal, yeast and worm
infections. Fresh garlic is thought to play a role in preventing food
poisoning by killing bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella enteritidis, etc.
To treat skin infections
The chemical ajoene found in garlic may help treat fungal skin infections like ringworm and athlete’s foot.
Blood thinning
The anti-clotting properties of ajoene found in garlic help in
preventing the formation of blood clots in the body. Hence, it may also
increase the risk of bleeding after surgery.
Reduce blood pressure
Angiotensin II is a protein that helps our blood vessels contract
thereby increasing the blood pressure. Allicin in garlic blocks the
activity of angiotensin II and helps in reducing blood pressure. The
polysulphides present in garlic are converted into a gas called hydrogen
sulphide by the red blood cells. Hydrogen sulphide dilates our blood
vessels and helps control blood pressure.
Protect heart
Garlic protects our heart against cardiovascular problems like heart
attacks and atherosclerosis. This cardio-protective property can be
attributed to various factors. With age, the arteries tend to lose their
ability to stretch. Garlic may help reduce this and may also protect
the heart from the damaging effects of free oxygen radicals. The
sulphur-containing compounds of garlic also prevent our blood vessels
from becoming blocked and slow the development of atherosclerosis
(hardening of the arteries). The anti-clotting properties of ajoene help
prevent clots from forming inside the blood vessels.
Reduce cholesterol
Garlic has the ability to moderately lower our blood triglycerides and total cholesterol and reduce arterial plaque formation.
Combat allergies
Garlic is known to have anti-inflammatory property. It can help the
body fight against allergies. The anti-arthritic property of garlic is
due to diallyl sulphide and thiacremonone. Garlic has been show to
improve allergic airway inflammation (allergic rhinitis). Raw garlic
juice may be used to immediately stop the
itching due to rashes and bug
bites.
Remedy for respiratory problems
Daily use of garlic might reduce the frequency and number of colds.
Its antibacterial properties help in treating throat irritations. Garlic
may also reduce the severity of upper respiratory tract infections. Its
benefits in disorders of the lungs like asthma, difficulty of
breathing, etc. make it a priceless medicine. Its ability to promote
expectoration makes it irreplaceable in chronic bronchitis.
Diabetes
Garlic increases insulin release and regulates blood sugar levels in diabetics.
Effective against warts and corns
Applying fat dissolving garlic extracts to corns on the feet and warts on the hands is thought to improve these conditions.
Cancer prevention
Daily intake of garlic has been found to lower risk of most types of
cancer. This anti-cancer property is due to allyl sulphides found in
garlic. PhIP, a type of heterocyclic amine (HCA), has been associated
with increased incidence of breast cancer among women. According to
studies, diallyl sulphide found in garlic inhibits the transformation of
PhIP into carcinogens.
Improve iron metabolism
Ferroportin is a protein which helps in iron absorption and release.
Diallyl sulphides in garlic increase production of ferroportin and help
improve iron metabolism.
Stir up passions
Garlic’s aphrodisiac property is due to its ability to increase the circulation.
Toothaches
Simply put some crushed garlic clove directly on the affected tooth
can help relieve toothaches due to its antibacterial and analgesic
properties. But be aware that it can be irritating to the gum.
Reduce weight
Many researchers believe that obesity is a state of long-term
low-grade inflammation. According to recent research, garlic may help to
regulate the formation of fat cells in our body. Pre-adipocytes are
converted into fat cells (adipocytes) through inflammatory system
activity. The anti-inflammatory property of 1, 2-DT (1, 2-vinyldithiin)
found in garlic may help inhibit this conversion. This may help prevent
weight gain.
