The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin

Review:  The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap is a story which revolved around five important characters who would loved  to live the kind of life they craved without being scrutinized and crucified, but they found themselves in a hateful society where their kinds of ideal love life was rebuked and despised. The story illustrated loyalty, true friendship, hate, prejudice comparison to race, the jews and as well as gays. Moreso assimilating all the Oscar Wilde’s quotes explored in this book, the story furtherore portrayed lives, the essence of living, honest, love, survival, death, good reputation and all!

To start with, while reading this book I could not break away from it. It’s a story with a lot of depth, good story backdrop and originality. At some point, I thought I had tears in my eyes as I neared the end of the book. Not that I’m too emotional, but this book is just way to transcendent not to affect anyone greatly. Just because I have access to the author I could not let her be. From time to time I contacted her to know what next happened in the book chapter after chapter, but she is a good suspense holder! She did well not telling me anything until I read through it all.

The story began in 1985 with the breaking news spreading around the world of the conviction of the well known and most successful playwright, novelist, and short story writer Oscar Wilde. Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor under the Britain’s Criminal Law for sexual activity between members of the same sex.

This incident caused people’s attitudes to change about homosexuality from a mood of pity and tolerance to hatred and abuse. The news was that Wilde was caught in the act with another mate, Lord Douglas, the son of the Marquins of Queensberry, and Victorian London would not tolerate such immoral decadence.

In Red River Pass in a small town of Nevada this kind of occurrence had also happened. The Parker boys had been playing out by the lake when they ran across Harold Simons hugging Bert Langlay. When the Parker boys ran home and told their parents, they had exaggerated what they saw; said the men were kissing, starting to undress. Within twenty four hours two families were thrown into irreversible turmoil. The story spread like untamed fire in the town. After days of the incident Harold Simons took a gun to his own head and blew his brains out. A week later both families moved from Red River Pass.

Also in the town were two women Mildred Dunlap and Edra Fitzgerald who loved themselves in ways couple love one another and they tried to protect themselves from the hateful society with stories of Wilde and the Harold and Bert.

Mildred was the brunt of ridicule and of jokes in the town because she has a prematurely receding hairline with some facial hair above her lips, muscles which showed through her dress sleeves like a man’s through his shirt, and a height which towered over a lot of men of the town at close to six feet. She was called a giant cow and the ugliest curse of the Red River Pass.

Josie’s jealousy ran deeper by the day for Mildred. She was a character with forceful personality which no one could understand why she had so much distaste for Mildred. She so hated her that she would go extra mile to destroy her. Josie and the sister hood of talebearers in the town had nothing to do with their lives than scout for lives to ruin. They were most vicious and the most closed minded petty people in the town that would give up their lives to see Mildred cleaned out.

Mildred being wealthy and controlling the purse strings of the community looked past this hatred and continued to help the people with her money, but was dying inside for all the hounding.  Despite Mildred generosity she remained Josie’s target for destruction and she knew it. With all the discrimination going about homosexuality, Mildred feared for her life and that of her cousin.

While the town people and head talebearer Josie busied with the news of Oscar Wilde, Mildred came up with the trick to get Charley Milpass attention who at the time struggled to save the life of the love of his life Emma Milpass suffering cancer. This Mildred’s plan was to avert any suspicion from forming around her and Edra. She wanted Josie and group to unfold another rumor different from what was really happening.

At first Mildred's plan failed. Charley who suffered unthinkable loss, of the love of his life, would not welcome any woman in his heart. However, with time Charley came to realized Mildred was a good person inside and out and the physical ugliness was just a cross for her to bear in her life. He became her true friend. Then, tittle-tattle swelled that Charley who claimed could never loved another woman but Emma was dating Mildred, impregnated her, and was set to marry her.

Mildred was glad for this new focus Josie and cliques now occupied themselves with, nonetheless with intensity of the gossip which was damaging to the human soul, on the inside, Mildred kept breaking down terribly from the years of none stop persecutions.

With the sweet friendship Mildred found in Charley, Edra feared she would lose Mildred to Charley. At nine-year-old Edra whose mother died at childbirth was raped. In all the months of her recovery from the shock of the rape, it was Mildred who nurtured Edra back to life again. On Edra’s twelfth birthday, three years after the rape, things forever changed in her life and between her and Mildred.

Edra felt unsaved with people and could not bring herself to love a man. Only in Mildred did she found any form of love and security. She confessed how she felt for Mildred on her birthday, their love life kicked started.

Charley found out about Mildred and Edra’s love life, knowing what grief it was to lose a loved one, he didn’t tell on them, rather he became supportive of their relationship. With time Edra relaxed around Charley, when she was sure that Charley only intended to be a true friend to Mildred and could never love another like Emma his late wife. The three became true friends, and once again Edra could trust again another person different from her family.

Helene Whitmore, one of the talebearers lost her only son little Frankie while she planned with Josie and the rest to bring Mildred down. Josie and husband Satchel were shooed out of the town to Carson City and Mildred had her life and good health back.

At the end of this book I found that Mildred had been hounded by her past because of her father's deeds and a man who looked like the father whom people believed they must had been related; Mildred was persecuted for this passed people’s mistakes without mercy and misguided vengeance.

This is all I’m going to give out from this book.

Summary: This is an absolute fascinating, great and touching novel. The author of this book is a very nice person. In a little while our paths had crossed, I’ve been touched by her true kindness. At some point when I couldn’t get this book with the readable format on my smart phone because my lap top was faulty, she gifted me the book on Amazon. Auntie P, thanks very kindly for the chance given me to review this wonderful book.

I found Edra’s transformation somewhat annoying at first when I didn’t know where the story was heading. I assumed the worse for Mildred. I imagined she would be killed or something. I felt Edra should have looked someplace else for another woman to love rather than put the well-meaning protagonist Mildred Dunlap in trouble. As soon as I knew that there was no harm to cause damage on Mildred’s life, I regained my peace. In Friendship, relationship, Mildred is an ideal person to have as a partner. I felt a great connection to her a great deal. She reminded me of myself;  you do good to people and in turn you are rewarded with evil.

The story world of this book was perfect. It slowly played out organically. It was like everything was happening around me in the real life. Overall, this story has other mesmerizing characters to hold you spellbind to the book. It’s a well crafted story. I recommend you get your copy of The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap if you haven’t.

Robert Craven talks to Darmie Orem! about his Christmas

It is Christmas Season when stores' windows display holiday lights and every where you look bring the most glamorous view in the world.

It's the Season you will wonder how to spend your holidays with family and friends, know which shows to see together and all.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate this Season of love, whether you buy into the whole Christmas racket or not - have fun wisely bringing the year to an end.

Talking of Christmas gifts, ideas for loved ones, and holiday treats, with me here today, is Robert Craven a WW2 / Action adventure / espionage author of the novel Get Leni. He is here to talk to us about his Christmas.

Interview Highlights

Robert Craven is glad to be on I Am Darmie Orem and Authors' Curtilage with Darmie Orem blogspots.

"Many thanks for inviting me on to your blogs Damilola."

Your Favorite Christmas Carol.

"Okay, my favorite Christmas carol is ‘Silent night’, why?, because it’s simply perfect"

How He Feels About Christmas.

"Christmas has mixed emotions for me, my father passed over Christmas 14years ago, so he’s in my thoughts this season. I love Christmas, where family get together, but to be honest, I’m more of a New Year’s Eve sort of guy. I like the idea of a blank page to start all over again."

I'm Sorry About Dad's Pass away.

"Thank you Damilola."

I Know A Lot Of Men Don't Like Going Into The Kitchen. I Hope You Are Not One Of Them?

"I’ve cooked two Christmas dinners in my time, but the washing up is murder!!!, I do cook, but should do more I think."

I Found Out There Are Traditional Dishes For Christmas, However, People Have Devices Different Ways Of Preparing Their Own Special Delicacies For The Festive. Robert Tells Us His Most Favorite Dish For The Season And The Recipes To Make It.

"My most favorite dish for Christmas is Turkey & ham, but alas have no secret recipe for making it. I par boil the potatoes before roasting them is about the only trick I can think of!"

You Have Age On Your Side, Obviously I'm One Of The Younger Generation. Robert Tells Us How Christmas Was Celebrated In His Younger Days.

"God the one thing I remember about growing up in Manchester as a child was Christmas day started with Church, back home for the afternoon film and then the Queen’s speech – something to this day I turn off. Then the Morecambe & Wise Christmas special, I still watch the repeats these days  – they were and still are, absolute classics."

Look Back To Your Early Days And This Generation, Do You Think Any Good Tradition Has Been Altered From The Celebration Of Christmas? If Any, Tell Us How We May Bring Back This Tradition To Make Christmas The Festive It Is Supposed To Be.

"When we moved to Ireland in 1979, Christmas meant some of the families on the road invited us into their homes and the latest ‘video’ would be played - good old VHS! And off to call in on friends and neighbours, the part of Dublin I lived in then, Drimnagh, actually had a good community and everyone was pretty much on speaking terms."

O.K

"It has to be said, Ireland always does Christmas, the decorations usually go up on our road the first week of December, and in one house’s case, never. What I have noticed since the economic collapse here, people are friendlier and more helpful – we had the Celtic Tiger years where every second person was an asshole, nothing like monetary collapse to bring the good back out in people. I think Christmas has got better over the years, though the commercialism never goes away."

He Tells Us His Best Christmas Sweets And Holiday Treats.

"My favorite sweet – my wife’s brandy butter – it rocks."

The English Folks In Those Days, I Don't Know About Now, Have Christmas Games. Is There Any In Your Native Land Which You Have Favored?

"We don’t really go for games to be honest, usually a board game is brought out, though the Wii is usually on now to burn the calories off after dinner!"

The holidays are traditionally a time of giving and giving to those most in need brings others joy. Are There Charitable Organizations Or Individuals You Know That Cater To People With Low Income Or Those That Don't Have At All Which You Would Want People To Extend Help To This Season Of Love?

"The only charities I donate to are Dublin Simon Community and Threshold – as one campaign goes ‘You are only two pay checks away from the street"

Robert Gives Links Of Charitable Organizations.

Any Pictures From From Previous Holidays?

"Would you believe the cameras were forgotten & we didn’t take any holiday snaps!!"

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.

Message In His Post Card This Season For His Lovely Readers.

"I hope everyone has a safe& peaceful Christmas is my only message for this season."

What Shoes And Shirts Designs Would You Suggest To People Short On Cash But Would Love To Have A Change Of Wardrobe For The Season?

"As for sartorial elegance, I’m a T-shirt & jeans guy, I might put a shirt on for Christmas dinner – my advice for any Christmas Day wardrobe, is wear something comfortable, it’s going to be stressful enough, so informal clothes help!"

He Mentions The Brand Name For His Choice Of Wines, Perfumes, Cosmetics, Shoes, Shirts, Pants.

"My tipple over Christmas is red wine, a nice merlot, as for a brand, I don’t have a particular favorite, that an aged Bushmills whiskey!"

Funny. *Giggling*

You Are The Author Of Get Lenin, What's The Inspiration Behind Writing This Book?

"Get Lenin was inspired by a piece I read in the Sunday Times 15 years ago; it was a review of Ilya Zbarsky’s ‘Lenin’s embalmers’, the story of how Lenin’s mausoleum was moved from Moscow to the Urals in the face of the German advance in 1941. I thought it would make a great story if a crack unit was sent in to steal it."

What's The Moral Message Behind This Book That You Want Your Readers To Grasp?

"The moral message of Get Lenin, is how the media can be twisted to suit a political agenda. The prime ‘villian’ is an American media mogul Donald T Kincaid who uses his power and influence to fund and film the operation. We should always double-check a government’s reasons for waging war, and question it without fear of reprisal."

He Tells Us The Challenges He Faced To Bring This Book To completion.

"Get Lenin took 5 years to write and get published – I kept a track of my submissions – in the end, before Taylor Street published the book, I had pitched the manuscript to 280 agents and publishers, of which 71 bothered to respond with a rejection, the more rejections I got, the more determined I became to get the novel published. Never at any point did I consider vanity or self-publishing; I really believed Get Lenin was good enough. I have since completed the sequel ‘Zinnman’ which was released in August 2012."

Dealing with the constant flow of rejection: when you finish writing and no agencies, contests and publishers would identify with your work for a long while, don't start to question your writing skills and your time. This is life after creative writing. Some writers are purely lucky some are fairly lucky. You have to keep your head high for the silver reward to meet you in one piece because it will always come.

On Robert Craven Story Generation Techniques.

"Story generation: I don’t have a formula to be honest, I write long hand and type it up, I do keep a large ‘map’ with the plot as the trunk of a tree, with the subplots and characters on the branches; the key is never to lose sight of the plot."

On How He Discovers His Writing Skills.

"I think every writer has his / her own voice, the only way to ‘discover’ it is to keep at it. I have noticed that Zinnman for me, is a technically better book and I’ve established a style / voice that works for me."

On His Up-Coming Books

"I have the third instalment of the series almost completed for launch in 2013, provisionally titled ‘A finger of night’ and exploring a fourth, but that’s for next year!"

 Book Blurb
As the German troops approach Moscow during the Russian offensive of World War II, encountering ever more determined resistance as they go, what if they could snatch the greatest and most heroic symbol of the Soviet Revolution, the body of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin?Would Soviet morale collapse? Would Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union be defeated? Would Nazi Germany conquer the world? This is the intriguing premise of Robert Craven's 'Get LENIN' which pits the academic British spymaster Henry Chainbridge and the seductive Polish infiltrator Eva Molenaar against the elite of the German Third Reich and the wealth and ambition of American movie mogul Donald T. Kincaid who will amass yet another fortune for himself recording the Nazis' triumphal seizure of Lenin himself. The race is on, and if the Nazi plot succeeds the war and humanity itself may be lost.

If You Haven't Grab The Copy Of Get Lenin Then, You Are Missing. I Tell You This Book Have The Turning Pages Effects You Would Find With A Spontaneously Written Novel.

To those of you living in affluence, don't forget to provide holiday gifts, toys, winter jackets and food to those God giving children which their parents has no money.

Merry Christmas In Advance To All And to Mr. Robert Craven. It was a great honor to have you come by my blogs.

"Happy Christmas and a prosperous 2013"

Murdered In Cruelty

A harsh sun shone outside the window but the breeze of the air conditioner blowing made the room seem cool. The young woman lying in the bed glared at the clock above the dresser, her forehead glistering from fear.

Fifteen past two. He wasn't coming.

No! He will come. He has to come! Not after all I have sacrificed!

She vaulted from the bed and paced round the bedroom, looking outside the widow for the umpteenth time. The day looked beautiful and vividly bright, the people that walked by on the street, were clad in fine revealing clothing. She leaned inside taking one final look at her luggage. The travel bags were standing in the middle of the room. Everything was ready.
Except for her guest.
Twenty five past two.
She stared at the wall clock, watching as it ticked away. Seconds multiplied into minutes that became hours and with each passing hour all her hopes and dreams seem to faded.
Half past eight. The clock struck to mark the half-hour.
There was a knock on the door. Excitement ran through her blood. She ran to the door, turned the lock and threw it open.
A man stood on the doorstep; a tall, huge, early thirties young man in a red-shirt and deep blue jean trousers.
"Sweetheart,' his voice was deep, but sweet.
In his arms they walked into the room and jumped into bed.
"Daughter Made Away With Father's Twenty Million Naira and elope with boyfriend of five years, have you read about it?"
"Of course."

"It must be painful."
"Painful? Reading about myself just made me laugh. Daddy didn't leave me with much choice."
"The Police are making full investion, you are all in the papers. I didn't mean to make your life this miserable. That wasn't what I planned. I just wanted a simple..."
Cecelia studied Bernard's small pupils close to tears.
"Why would you be talking like this when all I did, I did for us and our baby? We will go away to a country like South Africa, get married, start a business with the money. And in the future we will return Papa's money with interest."
"This is all wrong?"
Cecelia shook her head. Her happiness now giving way to a sense of terror.
"You didn't think this was wrong when I suggested the plans and kicked into action; now that I have twenty million naira here with me you think otherwise?"
"Listen to me Cecelia, let's get rid of this baby, return the money to your father, and then wait till he concents to our union."
"What rubbish are you talking!?" Her voice was angry, but the love in it showed in the way it trembled.
Bernard allowed a swift wicked smile to play around his plum lips. "You will remove the baby and return the money."
"You are crazy! You don't know what you are talking about!"
Bernard made as if to rise, but took one of the pillows up. He saw it was time he acted.
Cecelia's eyes, suddenly narrowed with suspicion perceving Bernard's musk smell; that don't just smell unless he was up to something really bad.
"Bernard are you okay?"
Bernard ignored her question. He rushed at her; suffocated her with the pillow until her life ebbed. Though she struggled to fight for her life, Bernard over powered her because he was huge and she was the petite type.
He stood up hands on his waists glaring at the briefcase filled with money.
What good money is to man's life? Now he can make a new life. A life faraway from his fatherland and marry a woman he won't have to love because of money.
Bernard's brain was whirring all the life he would live with the twenty million naira.
Hand stretched out to pick up the briefcase, in his head he heard a voice whispering.
It shouldn't be this way.
He waved the voice off to one side and left the room with the money.
Outside Cecelia's house Bernard joined a commercial motorcycle. The two rode in silence past houses, streets and busted into a street where hoodlums were fighting. The boys broke bottles, struck shining cutlasses against the tide road and it sparkled ember of lights.

The air was heavy with the blood of people already injured in the fight.
A particularly cold looking hoodlum with a big scar above his left eye holding a knife that threatned to suck blood, dragged Bernard down the motorcycle.
The sharp edge of the knife all of a sudden hit Bernard in the eye. He felt a burst of blood streaming down his face. The second eye was likewise stabbed.
He sank with a thud to the ground hand stretched out before him. He knew he was crying, but couldn't differentiate between the blood and the salty liquid which found their paths down his cheeks profusely.
The twenty million naira was gone!
The sound of voices and the echoes of sensentive footwares against the tied road slowly faded.
Bernard passed out!
People, Bernard presently is seeking help to be assisted with money to fly out of the country to have his eyes operated on so he can see again.
If you are in the position to help, would you help a murderer like Bernard?

Christmas Poem by Dramie Orem

The sad minds, now rejoice, for lives lived thus far, and the eyes from the cross that watch as they ought to; protect our foolish blind shadows from evil that this Christmas we may witness; the season which ushers in a new year, a new hope, a new vision, another ripe of age, an activation of dreams.

Sumptuous season dishes laid out: Christmas cake, custard, gingerbread in Christmas shapes served with golden syrup, cranberry sauce, meat balls, roasted turkey, smoked meat, spiced rice, fish pie, coconut ice-cream, champagne, Christmas games, some Christmas Carols to play on the piano - all amounting to rejoicing in the season.

What sadness do romance thy heart for penniless pockets and empty bread tables? Rejoice for the blood shed that man may live forevermore.

Think of the year that weed out a many to where worms feed on flesh as their daily bread and rejoice.

Let the sadness filled heart never be sad, not a complain. Rejoice in the light of Christmas and hold it in your heart as stars come out each night to remind us of the unfailing love we got freely from our Father in Heaven.

Rejoice Just Like Every Child Seeing The Wake of The Christmas Season.

Rejoice.

Merry Christmas In Advance to All My Readers, Audience and Followers.

The Invisible Slave Masters

Invisible Slave Masters by Darmie Orem

I freed from bondage of thee.

In the horrific ocean voyage of the midnight,
When stars are not shining, when the passenger all around me converse in tongues I know not to the chronicles of the grieving events of my life; when the winds are breathing heavily down my sobs, when my thoughts with the distance journey traveled to the Legend Land, in my heart I feel shackles broken.

Though the Stranger sees my explanation of demonic torment to be barbaric superstition, he hath helped me with description to the Legend Land where streets are paved with golden stones, tied, smooth and narrow like the paths to the Creator's Harbor.

The doors to the houses there are wide like the size of a garage. The tender blowing air in the city is balm to the troubled soul.

Like a journey into a sweet dream, the Land speaks of ancient glamor like paradise from the other side.
Then it dawn  upon my heart as I follow the foot path to the Legend harbor that I live on the other side of this wealthy Land.

Poverty, Lack, Limitation and Loneliness has become my inseparable companions.
O, that I might be lifted from grass to high places with the help of the Legend of my life whom I seek.

Rid of all my worldly clothing, my Legend, the Exorcist; wrapped the snow sparkling apparel round my body gaunt from suffering and a piece of it round my head.

The exorcism was not the usual type of rolling on the floor, pointing the cross at wild demons type portrayed in the fictional world of movies.

It was done prophetically with prayers observed in strange language naming each of the INVISIBLE SLAVE MASTERS - the evil entities that has  imprisoned my glory from the day of my conception.

Tied to the leafy palm tree lighted about with seven white candles; cross laid at my feet.

My heart thumps loudly in my chest looking down at the exorcist, the legend kneeling at the front of the Holy Book.

There is only one question in my head which is - is this the chosen exorcist, the Legend meant to rescue me in life to my Land of Glory?

Weather he is or not, my heart intervene with my deliverance.
And from within my soul I freed from the decade torments of the Invisible Slave Masters.

Knowing Your Screenplay Concept

You are about to write a screenplay. You've got the characters, plots springing up in your head and you can't wait to start churning out of all these ideas. Before you write your script, I want you to ask yourself this simple question, is my story a marketable concept?

All right let's look through this writing lesson article.

All compelling screenplay starts with a concept. The concept is the invented idea behind a screenplay. This is usually a short outline which tells the characters that the story is about; their conflicts and their story goals. The concept is the first thing in screenwriting or novel writing progression. The industry identifies two kinds of story concepts, succinct concept and soft stories. The first stresses action and the second highlights character.

 Marketable High Concept Stories

The majority of producers in Hollywood are looking for high concept screenplays. A high concept scripts are usually point out in a few lines. They are exceptional and have wide audience charm. A high concept script will often have all of these elements present to make it worth its class and they will always get you as the writer in production companies that don't look at unsolicited scripts. Their selling peak is often the story, and not the characters, so their review will contain a minimum of description. But this doesn't mean that great characters cannot be built into a high concept scripts.

The Soft Story Concept

They are the opposite of the emphatic character with IMMENSE problem and the three word logline a high concept story has. They are motivated by many characters interaction, captivating events and dialogue which is the key to their breakthroughs.

Finding The Hook

All stories are worth telling, and they have been told, so what's the spectacular twist on your story which will make the universe roar? What's that unique idea in your story that will grab the attention of the script reader to keep her turning pages till fade out and your later audience to stay glue to their TV or not willing to depart from the theatre after watching your movie? In the film business this is what they call the hook, beacause it hooks audience into watching the movie.

That's it on Knowing Your Screenplay Concept. I hope you find this article useful as a guide when deciding your concept. Till I come your way again, take care!
